America the Beautiful

With the Fourth of July right around the corner, I've been eyeing American flag inspired clothing on Pinterest. The other day I bought myself a new denim button down (a staple  in my wardrobe for sure) and I decided to turn my old one into a flag inspired cutoff! It was so easy, here's how it's done...
You will need: a button-down denim shirt (with sleeves or without, I cut the sleeves off of mine in Step 1), red and white acrylic paint, 1inch wide paintbrush, sponge cut into the shape of a star (super easy, draw star on sponge and cut with scissors to make your own stamp.)
If your working with a shirt with sleeves, take a sharp pair of scissors and cut the sleeves off. I left a tiny bit of the material on the shoulder seam to give it a nice fray after the first laundering.
Flip your shirt to the front side (*Insert cardboard inside to prevent seepage from paint through fabric*), and dip your star stamp into the white paint. Lightly press onto the fabric on the right-hand side of your shirt...
Randomly fill the whole side of your shirt with stars.
Now take your red paint and dry brush your stripes on the opposite front panel of the shirt...I did mine about 1 to 2inches apart. Allow to dry.
Once your red stripes have dried, dry brush the white stripes in between the red ones.
Once you have finished, leave your shirt laying flat, and allow to dry completely.
When the paint is totally dry, go in with some 80 grit sandpaper and LIGHTLY sand off an chunks of thickened paint. I went over almost all of my paint marks to give my design a worn in look. IRON. Using a hot iron, go over the whole shirt to help "set" the paint into the fabric, and then wash!
I LOVE my new shirt:) I felt like it was so easy to make, and I can't want to wear it for the Fourth!!

Are you already making plans for the holiday weekend?
