Simple Ojo de Dios

Ojo de Dios (or God's Eye) is a yarn weaving and/or spiritual object many of you may recognize from summer camp craft time. These beautifully woven yarn and wood pieces can be as simple or as complex as you could imagine. There are artists that make incredibly beautiful and intricate pieces. The crafty kind from childhood are usually made from yarn and popsicle sticks. I thought it would be fun to try a simple version with an ombre-ish yarn to give it a more complex looking finished product.
You will need:
Yarn of your choosing
Popsicle sticks (2 per )
Trinkets (if you wish for danglies in the center like I did)
Scissors
Make a cross with your popsicle sticks and grab an end of your yarn...
Tie a secure knot in the center. You will need to hold tight for the first half of your weaving so that the sticks don't shimmy around.
Begin weaving...over the top stick, then under (pull yarn to next stick clockwise) then under and over the next stick. Continue on going around and around. You will need to hold tight and ensure that your weaving stays nice and close together (you may periodically push everything toward the center) ...
It should begin to look like this! (this is actually the back side, if you flip it you can begin to see the beautiful pattern you are creating on the reverse, but it is much easier to work when looking at the back. Less confusing)
When you have only about a quarter inch left at the ends of your sticks, stop. Cut your yarn lose from the skein and tie a secure knot around the end of your last popsicle stick. I left my tail end of yarn long for hanging.

If you've chosen a trinket, attach it to the center of your "eye"...
I ended up making four of them so they would be a nice little  hanging group. I loved how the yarn I chose created different colors and patterns in each one. (I used "Parrot" by Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable)
So there's a little color for your Monday..in-case you needed it;)

Have you ever made these before? Do they totally remind you of summer camp?

  1. I've actually never seen these before, but I also never went to camp. I LOVE them and the yarn you chose. The remind me of mini dreamcatchers the way you hung them and attached the feather and charm:)
